Oturu Primary School Leads the Way

Oturu School has been awarded the Enviro Schools Silver Award for outstanding work in the development of high environmental practices while creating a real and successful commercial enterprise. A first for the Far North district.
Under the guidance of Principal Fraser Smith the school has developed practical projects as part of the academic teaching bringing real relevance to subjects like maths and science.
For some years the children of the school have produced virgin olive oil from their olive trees, honey products from their beehives, and a range of natural pharmaceuticals from their gardens. The products are so good the school struggles to supply the customer demand.
Incorporating good environmental practices with commercial production of consumer products is delivering excellent academic results relevant to the kids of the Far North. As a low decile school Oturu is performing well above its comfort zone. So much so a team from Oturu will be traveling to the United States next year to participate in the finals of the Problem Solving Competition. Good on yeah guys!
PS. The trip is costing around $40,000 so all donations welcome. Contact Fraser Smith Ph (09)408 2050
